About Willie McCovey
Willie McCovey was a powerful left-handed first baseman whose long San Francisco Giants tenure made him one of the defining sluggers of his era. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986.
Willie McCovey played 22 major-league seasons from 1959 through 1980, spending most of his career at first base with the San Francisco Giants. A left-handed hitter, he became known for exceptional power and finished with 521 home runs and 1,555 runs batted in. McCovey won National League Rookie of the Year honors in 1959 and captured the league’s Most Valuable Player Award in 1967 and 1969. He also appeared in six All-Star Games. After later playing for the San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics, McCovey retired as one of baseball’s most respected sluggers. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986.
