About Willie Stargell
Willie Stargell was a powerful Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder and first baseman whose leadership helped define two championship teams. A seven-time All-Star, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988.
Willie Stargell spent his entire 21-season Major League career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, debuting in 1962 and retiring after the 1982 season. Best known as an imposing left fielder, he also played first base and became one of the National League’s most feared left-handed power hitters. Stargell helped Pittsburgh win World Series titles in 1971 and 1979. His 1979 season was especially notable: he shared National League Most Valuable Player honors, earned National League Championship Series MVP recognition, and was a central figure in the Pirates’ championship run. Stargell finished with 475 home runs and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988. Pirates fans often remember him by his nickname, “Pops,” a reflection of his respected clubhouse presence.
